Meters to CBM formula
CBM = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m) × Quantity. Because the SI cubic meter (m³) is defined as 1 m × 1 m × 1 m, no divisor or multiplier is required.
Example 1 — Industrial machine crate
- Crate: 2.4 × 1.2 × 1.5 m
- Volume per crate = 2.4 × 1.2 × 1.5 = 4.32 CBM
- 3 crates → 12.96 m³ — comfortably an LCL booking

Example 2 — Project cargo skid
- Skid: 3.0 × 2.4 × 2.2 m
- Volume = 15.84 CBM — over-height for a standard 40ft (2.39 m internal), fits a 40HC (2.69 m)

When to use meters
Meters is the natural unit for anything larger than a standard export carton: industrial machinery, project cargo, ISO tanks, oversize crates and heavy-lift equipment. European and Asian bills of lading almost always quote packing dimensions in meters even when the goods are physically measured in cm on the factory floor.
